Yesterday marked the 36th anniversary of one of the most dangerous radio stunts in history. Radio personality Steve Dahl of WLUP-FM in Chicago rallied his listeners to join his “anti-Disco army”. They held a “Disco Demolition Night” at Comiskey Park, home of the Chicago White Sox. Dahl and the baseball team offered admission to the doubleheader of just 98 cents IF you donated a disco record to be blown up in center field between games. Authorities weren’t expecting 60,000 fans to show up for the stunt. Only 50 off duty cops had been hired to provide security for the event, and quickly realized they were no match for the unruly crowd. Fans stormed the field, which was set on fire at one point. Even legendary announcer Harry Carey couldn’t calm the crowd. Riot police were later called in. 39 arrests were made and several spectators had to be taken to the hospital.
