Question:
Did you let you kid(s) watch the Will Smith movie “I, Robot” when they were young, and they had nightmares about the robots in the movie?
Well, these days, all you have to do is send them to school for that effect!
Check this out: A school District in Western New York will deploy a new kind of teacher to greet students this fall: A full-on humanoid robot!
The robot, named Sally, will not replace the classroom teacher, but she’s, er, it’s programmed to provide “learning support” to both students and educators.
Sally will have a “lifelike appearance” with silicone skin and long brown hair. She’ll be stationary, in a seated position, but will have a wide range of upper-body movements and facial expressions. (Will she go our for margaritas after work on Friday with the other teachers?)
Sally won’t use the students’ names, so the kids will have to address themselves with a number. (Thinking this is a privacy concern!)
They’ll be able to say, “‘Hi Miss Sally, I’m student number 1234,’ and then Sally would be like, ‘Hey, we were talking about this yesterday, do you want to continue that conversation?'”
She can also support the teachers by interjecting if the teacher forgets where they’re at in the lesson plan, or accidentally skips over something.
The cost: Around $57,000.00.
