Recess.
It can be defined as a scheduled break from classroom instruction where students go outside to play, eat snacks, and socialize with other students. Recess can last anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes and gives students unstructured free time to “recharge”, mentally and physically.
And experts say that recesses have been shrinking over the years, and that’s worsening children’s health. They say kids should get a minimum of 20 minutes of recess every day, and multiple breaks throughout the day.
And that got me to thinking about recess “back in the day”. Remember? And I got to thinking about the Top 5 Old School Recess Games and What They Taught Us:
1. Red Rover: Taught us how to “clothesline” a classmate legally.
2. Dodgeball: Taught us “survival”!
3. Jump Rope: Taught us rhythm and public embarrassment.
4. Hopscotch: Taught us balance and knee pain.
5. Heads Up Seven Up: Taught us absolutely nothing.
