…The Eagles experienced a frightening encounter with mother nature over the weekend, one that many Hoosiers can sadly relate to. The band was performing Saturday night in Australia, playing at an outdoor concert venue in Victoria. The show had just started when severe weather started to move into the area. Dangerous thunderstorms mixed with 86 MPH winds caused the stage to shake, even breaking part of the stage area loose and was supposedly swinging over the crowd. The Bengingo Advertiser reports that Glenn Frey shouted “Get out” and the rest of the band exited the stage for cover. But once things calmed down 45 minutes later, they returned to finish the show. According to Vintage Vinyl News, screens on stage and other sound equipment was taken down or repositioned for safety.
Just hearing about that story brings back memories of the very unfortunate night back in 2011 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Severe weather moved through quickly then as well, and a plaque now marks the deadly tragedy take took the lives of seven at the show. That event caused major changes in how music venues and others prepare for bad weather and even the setup of tents for promotional use.
