…WIND CHILL ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM THIS MORNING TO 10 AM EST THURSDAY!
Extremely dangerous conditions tonight for Central Indiana. Our low will be 5 below, and the Wind Chill temperature will range from -15 to -25! Couple of reminders to keep you and your family safe:
- Bring your pets indoors. I have friends who tell me their pets prefer the cold weather, and this may be true, but animals can still be affected by extreme conditions. If nothing else, allow your pets to stay in your garage, with plenty of blankets or insulation.
- Check on an elderly friend, family member or neighbor this evening and make sure they’re aware that we’re expecting dangerous temperatures later tonight. Ask if their furnace is working properly and if they’ve had any heating issues. Sometimes elderly residents may have problems with their furnace but assume it will eventually warm up on its own. Or they feel overwhelmed in contacting a repairman for service. Offer them assistance. Also, remind them of #3…
- Open any cabinet doors that house your plumbing, like a kitchen cabinet where your sink is located, with the exterior wall on the opposite side. Allowing warm air into those cabinets will help to keep pipes from freezing. Also turn on the water tonight and allow a very small trickle of water to flow. This will help and does not cost nearly what it will if your water pipes burst from being frozen.
- If you’re traveling later tonight, take along a few items in the event you would have car trouble and be stranded. A very heavy coat, extra socks, gloves, ski mask, flash light, blankets. And if you have a cell phone, buy a car charger. If your phone is dead, having that car charger will be the best $15 you’ve ever spent!
- Stop by an auto parts store and ask them to check the battery in your vehicle. Most will provide this service for free. Older batteries often times have trouble when temperatures fall below zero. Being prepared will keep you from calling for roadside assistance and being stranded.
