What’s the old saying about “an ounce of prevention”? We’re expecting extremely dangerous temperatures tonight in Central Indiana, with a Wind Chill Warning. Apply a little “prevention” by doing these easy, simple steps and you won’t have frozen water pipes tomorrow:
- Open Kitchen & Bathroom Cabinets. Sounds simple, but allowing warm air into those cabinets that house plumbing to your sink will help keep them from freezing. And to be on the safe side, remove any dangerous cleaners so children and pets don’t get into them while the cabinets are exposed.
- For bathrooms and kitchens with an outer wall exposed to the outside, turn on your faucet to cold, and allow just a very small drip. Allowing this running water again, helps to keep pips from freezing. And just a very small trickle won’t cost you as much as it will to repair pipes that burst from a hard freeze like we’re expecting.
- I know for a lot of friends and family, they want to turn their thermostat down at night, but experts say to maintain the same temp throughout the entire day. It will cost you a little more on your heating bill, but again, the cost will be much greater if your pipes freeze.
FINALLY, PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS OUTDOORS TONIGHT!..or anytime temperatures turn dangerously cold (or hot for that matter). I’ve heard from some listeners before that claim, “oh, my dog prefers the cold”. True, they might enjoy being outdoors over the indoors, but as their caregiver, it’s our responsibility to make sure they are not at risk during extreme weather conditions. Allow your pet to stay in a semi-heated garage, back porch if nothing else. A dog house, even insulated with straw or blankets is not enough to keep your pet safe. And if you see a neighbor’s pet left outdoors, CALL THE POLICE! Don’t think to yourself, “Oh, that’s terrible!” and then do nothing. You can remain anonymous when calling the police, and you’ll quite possibly be saving an animal’s life.
