The combat boots and dog tags Alan Alda wore while playing the wisecracking surgeon Hawkeye on the beloved television series “MASH” sold at auction recently for $125.000 bucks!
Alda held onto the boots and dog tags for more than 40 years after the show ended but decided to sell them through Heritage Auctions in Dallas to raise money for his center dedicated to helping scientists and doctors communicate better.
Alda’s character, Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce, was a talented surgeon who helped ease the stress of working in a war zone with his witty remarks, practical jokes.
The boots and dog tags, given to him by the costume department, “made an impression on me every day that we shot the show,” said Alda, who won five Emmys for his work on the sitcom. One of my favorite “Hawkeye” quotes is ““I’ll have two scrambled powdered eggs and a slice of World War II surplus bread, and don’t make it tasty.” The TV show MASH is what helped me really understand the unspoken about what my Dad went through during the Korean War. My pops and I never missed an episode and it bonded us ever stronger. I thank you Alan Alda for what you are doing with your charity work! Hear why the boots and dog tags were so special to Alan Alda for the past 40 years. It will make you laugh and cry just like his character “Hawkey” in MASH. Courtesy: YouTube
