… “American Pie” by Don McClean has been hailed by many fans and music critics as one of the greatest songs of our time. The lyrics tell a story of our pop culture. It’s McClean’s signature song and what he will forever be remembered by. So why is he now selling the handwritten lyrics to the song he penned back in 1971? He claims it’s because he needs the money.
"I'm going to be 70 this year. I have two children and a wife, and none of them seem to have the mercantile instinct. I want to get the best deal that I can for them. It's time."
Experts predict that McClean’s 16 page document of his handwritten lyrics could bring in anywhere from $1 million to nearly $2 million! The document supposedly has never been seen before by the public. It features "237 lines of manuscript, and 26 lines of typed text." But it also appears that McClean is going to sell off other items that are just taking up space or in storage. He explained saying,
"I'm going to rid myself of a lot of stuff. In a year or two, I'm going to have a big auction with guitars, clothes, boots, saddles, silver and watches. I collect a lot of stuff. It's time to let other people have it."
Auction is set for April.
