With the recent success of the Michael Jackson biopic, we’re now hearing about other musicians having their story told on the big screen. I reported last week that the Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne biopic will most likely be out in a couple of years (according to their son, Jack). Variety reports that a biopic about Billy Joel will soon tell the story of his early years. The film, titled, ‘Billy & Me’, will take fans on a journey, shared through Billy’s first manager, Irwin Mazur. The only problem is that Joel apparently isn’t so eager for this movie to happen and it looks like it’s more of an ‘unauthorized’ biopic. Billy’s rep issued a statement saying that they will license any of his music for the film and said that Billy, “has not authorized or supported this project in any capacity, and any attempt to move forward without it would be both legally and professionally misguided.”
I’ve been a fan of Billy Joel since I was a kid, so I really hope that this ‘unauthorized’ biopic doesn’t go through. I feel like his story should be told when he sadly, one day, will no longer be with us. Much like the ‘Michael’ biopic or others that have waited to tell the story once the entertainer is gone. Joel has had his share of highs and lows. I have no doubt that his former manager has many stories too that he could use for a documentary…but please, let’s not call it a biopic~
