Imagine owning the handwritten lyrics to Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’! 13 pieces of paper that Freddie Mercury scribbled out the musical masterpiece. Well it now has a new owner, as it sold at a Sotheby’s auction over the weekend for a whopping $1,700,000! The collection of Freddie’s private items included paintings, clothing, costumes he wore on stage and even jewelry. They had been given to his close friend, Mary Austin. For several decades, she looked after these one of a kind items, but had recently commented in an interview that it was time to put her affairs in order and sell them. Many of these pieces needed to be in a museum and quite possibly could still end up there. Here’s a breakdown of some of the auction:
Freddie’s grand piano = $2.2 million
Silver snake bracelet = $881,000
Freddie’s moustache comb – $189,000
A school book signed, Frederick Bulsara (his given name) = $88,786
