Kinda saw this one coming, but organizers of the famous ball drop on New Year’s Eve in Times Square say it will be happening virtually. It’s been an annual tradition since 1908 and has only missed twice during the war in 1942 and ’43. We won’t see the usual 1,000,000+ people pack themselves into the Big Apple to ring in the new year. Absolutely the right call with the pandemic far from over and flu season unfortunately will be in full force by the end of December. The Last thing we need is another huge surge of folks infected with the coronavirus. Now you may be saying, but it’s ‘outdoors’ so wouldn’t it be safer than an indoor event? Remember, there’s typically over ONE MILLION people, packed shoulder to shoulder in Times Square celebrating on New Years Eve. If someone’s sick and starts coughing or sneezing, kinda hard to dodge it, right? But again the upside is that the ball will drop and organizers are working on still adding musical performances.
