So check this out… according to a recent survey, 18% of parents have regrets when it comes to the name they gave their child! My wife Jenni and I spent months kicking around various names for our son, and finally landed on Reed Caytano Browning. Early on in the brainstorming process, I had suggested Jagger, Chase and Axl. It wasn’t that Jenni didn’t like those names, but she wanted something that tied our son to our family and was unique. Reed is my father in law’s middle name, and honestly, my son looks like a Reed. Caytano was my grandfather’s first name, so I was very happy that we incorporated that.
So what were some of the reasons these parents regretted the name they chose for their child?
1. The name was too trendy so too many other kids have it.
2. Quote, “It just doesn’t feel right.”
3. They never liked it in the first place, but they were pressured into picking it.
4. It doesn’t suit their kid.
5. It’s not distinctive enough.
6. There are spelling or pronunciation issues with it.
7. They don’t like the shortened version that their kid wound up being called.
8. There’s been a change in public perception of it since they picked it . . . like all those parents who named their daughters “Isis.”
9. A celebrity wound up using the name for THEIR kid.
And 6% of parents have actually CHANGED their kid’s name.
