Facebook has finally caved and announced they will be adding a “DISLIKE” button soon. No definite date, but I would imagine we’ll be able to start showing our disgust by year’s end. Founder Mark Zuckerberg explained, “What [users] really want is the ability to express empathy. Not every moment is a good moment”. This is true. A friend of mine just posted that his family lost their beloved cat. Another friend posted they now have cancer. I certainly don’t want to ‘like’ those posts, so the new ‘dislike’ button will help to immediately express my empathy. But unfortunately we’ll also know the cynics who will click ‘dislike’ when a friend posts something positive, just to spite them. I know, pitiful, right? Do we really need this extra layer of negativity, especially in this day in age? Some people thrive on drama, and they will use the ‘dislike’ button more than the ‘like’ button. You probably know someone who is easily offended or gets their feelings hurt even if you forget to ‘like’ their post about their birthday or an engagement announcement. Imagine what this will do to their ego when they see not just people, but FRIENDS and FAMILY choosing to dislike something that they’ve decided to share. This could actually backfire on Facebook, and cause some to stop using the social media platform. Could a ‘hate’ button be far off? So grow thicker skin, the wolves are at the door~
