… No one will dispute that Sting has had a successful career in music. Consider his solo work and his hits with The Police. But recently fans didn’t seem to take to Sting’s Broadway production, “The Last Ship”. The show was based upon his childhood, growing up in a shipbuilding community in England. Unfortunately the costly price tag to operate such a production, $15 million to launch and nearly half a million EACH WEEK, was greater than the ticket sales, which were soft from the beginning. Then in early December, Sting actually joined the cast, some hoping that would draw a crowd. Only a slight uptick. According to The New York Times, The Last Ship will end its run later this month. Producers commented:
“We have been bewildered and saddened by our inability to sustain an audience for this musical that we deeply love”.
But better to have followed his dream of creating a Broadway show based upon something he knew all so well, than to have never taken the risk. I have great respect for that. Sting will take a short breather and return to the road, touring with Paul Simon.
